This is what we are training for!

Welcome to Byrd Dog Kennel’s new website!

This is my very first website and I am so incredibly excited!  Thanks to John S. for prompting, suggesting, and then finally just making the site for me!  I have been extremely busy lately with both jobs and the doggies.  I will endeavour to maintain the site, and post regularly.

Just to get up to speed here, I have been training the guys this season since August.  They jumped into training like professionals.  I guess they are.  These dogs really impress me though, every year they have matured physically and mentally, and to the point that 5 months of no team training does not phase them – they know exactly what to do, what the harnesses mean, and all the commands. Every time I run the team I am so incredibly impressed by their desire everything I want them to do, every time I ask.  Without question.

Having a small kennel (16 dogs) has allowed me to bond very closely with all of my guys.  They are very at good voice commands, and make it easy for me to work with them.  I run one team of 10 dogs, and I have 6 retired dogs, who are in fact the perfect dogs for one lucky young musher who comes every Sunday to run them.

Let me tell you a little about my friend Vada.  Vada is a very intelligent, compassionate and eager girl who loves dogs.  She loves dogs like I loved horses when I was her age.  Last year Vada and her mum, Beth, approached me about my mentoring Vada as a Junior Musher.  I thought it was a great idea and we spent a whole season running dogs on Sundays.  Vada went from a young girl who simply loved dogs, to a girl who could harness a dog, set up a sled with lines and snow hook, and race in the Junior North American Championships!  This year I was thrilled to learn that Vada wanted to come back and learn more about mushing, and this season she is training the 6 retired dogs, and will decide who she will race by their performance in the team.

I am super excited to have Regency Fairbanks Hotel come back on board as a sponsor.  They sponsored me last year as well, and I am very proud to support them as much as I can as well. They have a great website: http://regencyfairbankshotel.com

Goldstream Sports, one of my two jobs is also a major sponsor of mine.  Joel and the boys are very knowledgeable about skis, waxing, and many other strange and wonderful things.  The website there is: http://goldstreamsports.com.  If you cannot get enough of my writing, subscribe to the Goldstream Sports newsletter!

OK.  For a first post, this is getting long.

Thanks for reading.  Keep coming back for more information on the dogs, training, racing, and Vada’s season!
